As have many others before me, I got tired of the spam that seems to pervade every facet of the Internet. Even this site. I wrote my own spam filter, and it has caught its fair share of spam, but in the end I spend entirely too much time reviewing comments to insure they are illegitimate before I delete them. My first thought was to implement a CAPTCHA on the comment form. However, after reading Sitepoint's interesting debate on the accessibility issues and ultimate downfall of the method, I have decided to have a go with the Akismet anti-spam service. With any luck, nobody will even notice the implementation, except of course the endless line of spammers.

SPAM SPAM...we dont like SPAM (monty python, one each) :-) One good thing though its, if you get marked as spam, then we probably didnt want to read the comment to start with. (or at least thats my theory anyways)
I'm sorry that this comment is unrelated to the post, but I don't see a contact form or anything of that nature. I came across your blog through Matt Jones' blog and I was wondering if you hold a patent on those "widescreen" black bars or something. I love them! Seriously though, I'm currently working on a redesign and was wondering if it'd be alright if I used something of that nature.
I haven't came across any other sites using them, so I thought they would be somewhat original. I'm surely not the first person to use them though, so feel free to use them yourself. I'm glad you like them actually, as most of the feedback i've received on them so far was that they were distracting.
Just so you know, Internet Explorer doesn't respect the position:fixed property, so the effect is somewhat diminished in that browser. I'm sure there are workarounds, but I wanted to stay almost completely "hack" free.
I don't really try to hack up my site either. If certain people don't want to use a modern browser, than I probably don't want their visit anyway. I'm a Firefox user myself. Thanks! (I just realized I said "of that nature" twice in my last comment... )
I haven't used Akismet, but I can OVERWHELMINGLY recommend Spam Karma (and have). It's absolutely unbelievable.
